| Ahoy
there and welcome aboard, as
we embark on a true adventure
which started in 1988 in the
Caribbean. As a Real estate
Broker/Developer in Colorado
the economy had recently been
devastated by the 1986 tax reform.
My ex-wife and I were wanting
to move and sell the real estate
there. When one day while reading
the Wall Street Journal I saw
the ad below. My ex-wife and
I enjoyed sailing so much that
we had planned on getting a
sailboat and sail the Caribbean
after we retired. The economy
in Colorado was on the rocks
and we were both overly stressed
because of this. So we decided
a sailboat in the Caribbean
would be the perfect change.
The next thing I know I was
in St Martin checking out the
vessel. I mailed the College
that had the Yacht an offer
to trade for our depressed real
estate in Colorado. After several
months of negotiations we were
able to work out terms to purchase
the 90’ Yacht. So we were
off to St Martin.
These pages
are primarily of living on the
Sea Princess and the culture
shock, adventure, sailing the
caribbean, renovation of a 90',
160,000 lb 2 masted sailboat,
exploring deserted islands,
how I was hijacked by modern
day pirates, my ship was stolen
twice and how I got it back,
doing charters onboard and great
times which make up a part of
my life that I will never forget
and will love to share with
all that lend an ear. So get
ready and welcome aboard as
we embark on a high adventure
aboard the Sea Princess.
The Sea Princess was a 90’
foot two masted square rigged
sailboat. This was truly a ship
you could sail around the world
in but she was in desperate
need of work and restoration.
I had restored many boats in
my time but this was different,
this was a ship. Most of the
boats I had restored weighed
anywhere between 2,000 to 6,000
lbs. The Sea Princess was 160,000
lbs and was like a floating
island with all the conveniences
of home. It took all of six
months to restore her. I lived
aboard the Princess for almost
3 Years. During this time she
was stolen twice, I was
hijacked by Haitians once and
was almost wrecked three times.
It was great fun. We sailed
to numerous islands some inhabited
and some not. We saw a little
Voodoo, enjoyed island life,
ate great sea food, and were
almost killed several times.
The music was wonderful to the
likings of myself and any other
Jimmie Buffet fan. It was filled
with steel drums and local reggae.
I met a lot of interesting people,
traveled to some great islands,
and enjoyed some wonderful beaches
and charters as well as some
fantastic sailing. It was an
incredible experience.
